HARD FESCUE |
Aurora Gold has many uses
Aurora Gold is an excellent choice for golf course extreme roughs,
highway shoulders, parks, and expansive areas that would otherwise
be costly to maintain and where traffic is not a factor.
Aurora Gold should be used as a monostand to take advantage of
its glyphosate tolerance. In Oregon trials, all known weeds were
removed with low rates of glyphosate. The turf will tolerate I
pt./ac. rate, but 4 oz. is adequate to control Poa annua
and most weeds.*
Seeding and maintenance
Aurora Gold performs well in a wide range of soils where light
irrigation is available. It will withstand moderate drought
conditions. Ideal soil pH is from 5.5 to 7.0.For low maintenance, 1 to 2 lbs. actual N per 1,000 sq. ft. per
year is ample, 3 to 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. for high maintenance.
Early fall and spring are ideal times to plant. After seeding,
germination will take place in about 7 to 15 days, depending on
soil temperatures, and first mowing can be expected in about 30
days.

Growth Height - Planting in Nursery Situations:
With the use of
glyphosate (weed control and pgr activity), the typical low
growth habit of the hard fescues such as Aurora, and the limited
water going on a tree plantation, It would be surprising to see
it go much over a foot. I'd think that one or two mowings per
year would take care of things. In seed production fields, the
hard fescues are rarely more the 'knee high'. In our vineyard
trials in California it's only about 6" tall.
Other than the hard
fescues, I don't know of much else that fits the need so well.
The ability to withstand the use of glyphosate really makes this
an ideal grass for Christmas tree production. It greatly
simplifies weed control and makes a great ground cover between
rows in vineyards and in field tree plantations..
