Seven Seas Chewings Fescue Grass
Festuca rubra var. commutata
Chewings Fescue is a bunch-type fescue with an upright growth pattern that resembles Tall Fescue grass while retaining the fine leaves of the fine fescues. Tolerant of shady conditions such as areas among large oak trees. Chewings fescue will establish faster than creeping red fescue. Due to it's high shade tolerance chewings fescue is a good grass seed to use to overseed shady lawns. Chewings fescue requires less mowing than other grasses and can be mown as low as 1.5". Well adapted to sandy, acidic and infertile soils, Chewings Fescue grows well in the cooler areas of the northern USA and Canada, the coastal regions of the Northeast, Pacific Northwest and other areas where summers are cool. Chewings fescue also makes good home lawns in the northern USA, Canada, and the coastal Northwest and Northeast.
Seven Seas Chewings Fescue Characteristics:
- Medium-dark green color
- Improved shade tolerance
- Resistant to powdery mildew and rust
- Good overall disease resistance
Seven Seas is a fine fescue developed for improved shade tolerance
and resistance to powdery mildew. Its appearance and performance are similar to Jamestown and Shadow
except that 7 Seas is resistant to powdery mildew and rust. 7 Seas has a medium-dark green color and a
blade width and heat tolerance comparable to Jamestown. When used at 10-12 percent in overseeding
mixtures on golf courses with perennial ryegrass, 7 Seas provides a true putting surface, absent
of grain. It has also shown to ease the spring transition on bermuda grass greens. It is ideal when used in a
natural setting and cut once or twice a year.
Recommended Use, when combined with other species:
Golf Courses (outer roughs), Athletic Fields, Parks, Home Lawns,
and Sod Farms
Climatic Zones:
3, 5, 6, 7 (may not be adaptable to all areas within each climatic
zone)
Establishment & Maintenance:
Seven Seas performs best in soils with a pH of 6.5 to 8.
Seven Seas has a low to moderate nitrogen requirement with 1-2
pounds of actual N per 1000 square feet per year is adequate in most
situations. 7 Sea’s optimum mowing height is 2.0 – 3.0 inches but
can be adjusted higher or lower depending upon maintenance practices
and intended use. 7 Seas performs best on sandy soils with adequate
drainage. The fine fescues do not perform well in compacted wet
soils.
